Eating Disorders (EDs) have multifactorial origins, and intensive use of social media is directly related to the maintenance and worsening of symptoms. Prolonged exposure to idealized beauty standards on social media promotes body dissatisfaction and harmful health behaviors. This study aims to report the experience of developing and validating an educational video about the impacts of digital social media use on the predisposition to and maintenance of ED symptoms. Ten patients diagnosed with EDs, monitored at a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, participated in semi-structured interviews and focus groups. The transcribed material was submitted to content analysis, and the data were used to develop the video script. Audiovisual production guidelines were followed. The video was reviewed by healthcare professionals, which highlighted the challenges of creating neutral representations in the video, avoiding the association of images with stereotypical body standards. The importance of raising public awareness about the risks of indiscriminate use of social media was also discussed, as well as how exposure to these platforms can both worsen symptoms and support patient recovery. Educational videos are valuable tools for disseminating information about mental health, but their production still faces challenges in meeting the specific demands related to mental health and in creating inclusive, non-stereotyped characters.
